Arachne, named after the Greek goddess of weaving, is a digital architectural endeavor that redefines an ordinary building with 3D printed components. The design is inspired by the spatially intertwined lattices that hang on the building in a curtain wall mechanism. The result is a stunning facade that mirrors its digital model and renderings, a feat made possible only by the innovative design and fabrication techniques employed.

The project covers a three-floor building of 10 meters in height and 12 meters in width, facing an important public square. The main facades are adorned with a strong iconic articulation to garner attention. The unique properties of Arachne lie in its use of 3D printing technology, which allows for the seamless adoption of the design concept. This technology was chosen for its ability to create intricate designs and patterns that would be difficult to achieve with traditional methods.

Arachne was realized using FDM 3D printing technology, with PLA plastic as the material of choice. The design covers an area of 308 square meters and consists of 2218 3D printed components, weighing a total of 5 tons. The design team, led by Lei Yu and Yanxin Wang, utilized parametric design principles and digital fabrication techniques to bring this project to life.

Arachne's unique design and innovative use of technology have not gone unnoticed. The project was awarded the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018.
